education about shaken baby syndrome/abusive head trauma

According to the CDC, Abusive Head Trauma is a severe form of child abuse that results in a brain injury. It often happens when a parent or caregiver is angry or frustrated because of a baby's crying. It is 100% preventable and is NOT an accident. Every day 3-4 baby are shaken and abused in the U.S.

Crying in infants is NORMAL. This may include long periods of inconsolable crying. If you think something is wrong with a baby it's best to call a doctor.

Nearly all victims of abusive head trauma suffer serious and long term health conditions. Babies will have a traumatic brain injury, retinal hemorrhages and many times other abuse related injuries. 1/4 of victims will not survive.

Examples of chronic health conditions:

  • Cerebal Palsy
  • Quadriplegia
  • Cognitive Behavior (Intellectual and Learning Disabilities)
  • Psychosocial
  • Organ Systems

If you feel like you are losing control when caring for a baby you SHOULD:

  • Put the baby in a safe place like a crib and let the baby cry while you calm down.
  • Take a deep breath and use calming exercises to calm down.
  • Call a friend, or neighbor to ask for support.
  • It's NEVER okay to hit or shake a baby!

If you suspect that a caregiver has shaken or hurt your baby, or if you have had a moment of frustration, call 9-1-1! Do not wait!
